Sunset Café Saturday – Do you “strive for 5” or “aim for 10”?

Happy Saturday friends! This week I have been focused on produce. I realized last weekend how little produce I had in the house and so Mr B and I made a trip to the store. You should have seen the conveyor belt! Leafy greens, tomatoes, celery, peppers, apples, pears, pineapple; he even talked me into some kiwi! So this week we have been coming up with lots of great ways to eat the yummy stuff we have in the house now.


Of course the general recommendation for a healthy diet by all the governmental organizations is at least 5 servings of produce. They even use the cute phrase: “strive for 5″ to help us remember. But I challenge you that this is not enough! Even better than that would be to ‘aim for 10”. If we can get 10 servings of produce in our bodies most days we can accomplish so many things.

We would have a powerhouse of nutrients going in to our bodies, our digestion would be much improved, our fluid intake would be greater due to the large amount of water in the produce, our tummies would feel fuller leading us to eat junk food less, our skin would glow, our nails and hair shine, our energy levels go through the roof, and more!! Who doesn’t want all that? This leads us to the more difficult question: how to get all that produce to fit into each day?

There are many ways to get more produce into our lives. The best thing to get used to is having some produce with every meal. Another easy, quick way is to make a smoothie. You can drink smoothies any time of the day. It can be a great filling breakfast, a refreshing snack, or a yummy dessert. My favorite, easy, go-to smoothie always involves blueberries. Of course they aren’t always in season so we use a lot of frozen blueberries in our house. So I put a banana, a cup of blueberries, some water or milk, yogurt if I want protein, and at least 2 cups of spinach. That’s 5 servings right there! Blend it up and yum, yum!

Sometimes I’m not feeling the smoothie though. Like today. So I had a couple of eggs with avocado, and side of an orange. There’s 2 servings and I will make sure I get at least one more serving with each meal and a snack today. You see that it can be much easier that you might think. 🙂
